With the 2013 NFL Draft less than a week away, the Kansas City Chiefs appeared to be “locked in” with taking Texas A&M star Luke Joeckel with the first overall pick. Sure, a team like the Chiefs could go in a number of directions, but will they be taking the right pick with Joeckel?
When looking at some of the top players from this year’s draft class, there’s no question Joeckel ranks near the top of his list and he should be able to have an immediate impact during his rookie season. It’s rare to see an offensive lineman at No. 1, but if Kansas City sticks through with their word–they’ll certainly be getting a special player in Joeckel.
The team already made a big acquisition this summer with Alex Smith from the San Francisco 49ers and the main focus heading into next season should be to figure out a way to protect him as much as possible. Don’t let last year’s record fool you–this Chiefs team has made plenty of changes this offseason to bounce back in 2013 and make a run at the AFC West.
New quarterback. New head coach. And if they keep their word on Joeckel–a solid new offensive tackle.
This year’s draft class is filled with plenty of great talent, but it’s difficult to think of any other player better for the Chiefs at No. 1 than Joeckel and expect him to make an immediate impact during his rookie season.
