North Carolina State quarterback Mike Glennon doesn’t receive a high amount of publicity as a potential first-round pick, but is considered by many to possess some of the attributes of a quarterback who has a chance to outshine the rest of the 2013 NFL Draft class.
“I like Mike Glennon,” NFL Films’ Greg Cosell said. “And I think the thing that stands out with him first of all (is) his functional mobility for a big man is far better than people might give him credit for … Now, does his decision making need to speed up a little? Absolutely. But … I think Glennon could (go) late in the first round, and I wouldn’t have a problem with that at all. I think he has probably, of the quarterbacks in this class, more of the attributes you look for than maybe — maybe — any other quarterback in this class.”
At 6-foot-7 with perhaps the best arm in this draft class, Glennon draws a lot of comparisons to Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, or more recently, New England Patriots quarterback Ryan Mallett.
Flacco stands at 6-foot-6 and possesses arguably the strongest arm in the NFL. Like Glennon, he is a traditional passer but not quite a statue — as Cosell puts it, he has “functional mobility.” Like Flacco during the 2012 regular season, Glennon flashes potential brilliance with his arm strength and ability to make all the throws, but also frustrates coaches with consistency and lack of pocket awareness.
Whether he takes as long as Flacco to develop into a franchise quarterback remains to be seen, but Glennon’s Flacco-like attributes make him an extremely intriguing first-round prospect.
