New York Jets GM John Idzik Considering Trade Offer

Naming the New York Jets‘ holes entering the 2013 NFL Draft becomes a rather arduous process. You could go quarterback, running back, wide receiver, tight end, outside linebacker — sorry, I ran out of breath. No amount of draft picks can completely satiate the needs that years of horrible drafting by the Rex Ryan-Mike Tannenbaum duo has created. But the Jets will sure try.

New general manager John Idzik is openly fielding offers in an attempt to multiply the number of needs they can fill this week, after finding himself in better position thanks to the unloading of Darrelle Revis for the No. 13 overall pick today. The deal also brought in the conditional third/fourth round pick in 2014, which we could also very well see dealt this Thursday or Friday in an attempt to alter this draft’s attack.

“I think the real substantive talks will come (Thursday),” Idzik said, via ESPN. “I think we’re in a position at No. 9 and No. 13 in the first round to get two really good players, but it also opens up the gates for potential alternatives, potentially trading down and picking up more players. We’ll be open minded about it. This is a very deep draft. … We would not be averse to picking any player if our evaluation determines that is the best talent available when we pick.”

The “deep draft” remark makes me think the Jets might not mind trading down to rounds two, three and four at all if it obtains the reciprocate pick value and then some. According to MockDraftable.com’s pick trade calculator, the Jets’ No. 9 and No. 13 selections could each be swapped for lower first-round picks coupled with a second-rounder and potentially much more. One trade that would present roughly equal value would be for the San Francisco 49ers to move up to No. 13 while claiming a Jets fifth-rounder and send New York their 31st and 34th overall picks in return.

All in all, the Jets hold picks No. 9 and No. 13 in round one, No. 7 in round two, No. 10 in round three, No. 9 in round four, No. 8 in round five, No. 10 in round six and No. 9 in round seven.
