Make a Decision: Following Tim Tebow Release, New York Jets Need to Avoid Continued QB Confusion

Kevin Hoffman-USA Today Sports

On Monday morning, the New York Jets made their first move in regards to solving the ongoing drama that has been their quarterback situation. Tim Tebow was the first to go, as the team announced their release of one of the most overpopulated quarterbacks in NFL history.

With one decision in the books already, their work is not done. Even after releasing Tebow, the Jets still have five quarterbacks listed on the roster. The biggest problem with that — they still have no idea who the team’s starter is or what direction they want to pursue. Well for New York, it’s kind of a big deal and the last thing that the Jets or their frustrated fans want is additional quarterback confusion.

The decision to put Tebow on waivers was a good move, it released the Jets from one aspect of unnecessary drama. Now however, more decisions need to be made. The one quarterback on the team’s roster that has a bright future is second round draft pick Geno Smith. Jets’ GM John Idzik said on Tuesday morning that their is an open competition at the quarterback. Good, that’s great news — that’s probably what should’ve happened last summer instead of Mark Sanchez receiving a contract extension.

The Jets intend on bringing Sanchez into camp this summer and he could still potentially be the opening day starter. The training camp controversy is fine, but the team still needs to figure out who their top three quarterbacks are and who’s even in the competition to be the opening day starter. There’s too much concern going into this one positional race, especially after the season that the Jets and their fans endured a season ago.

Matt Simms virtually has no chance to make the roster, so that cuts their depth chart down to four. With that being said, there’s no way Smith doesn’t make the team. So that leaves Sanchez, David Garrard and Greg McElroy. You would assume that two of the three will make the roster, and while training camp will likely be the determining point, a stance needs to be taken in some sort of direction.
