After weeks of speculation, it’s finally become official–the Minnesota Vikings will give Joe Webb a shot at wide receiver for the 2013 season.
The move comes during the offseason after the team brought Matt Cassel on board to compete with Christian Ponder (or at least provide him with guidance) for the starting job next year and as bad as it sounds–there was no point in keeping Webb around as a third-string quarterback. Webb has received numerous opportunities over the years to prove himself as a starting quarterback, but if last year’s playoffs are any indication of what he’s capable of–it’s safe to say Webb isn’t fit to be a quarterback at the NFL level.
While Minnesota is interested to see what he brings to the table as a wide receiver, nothing is set in stone as far as a roster spot for next season considering Webb has yet to play the position at the NFL level. There are plenty of wide receivers on this year’s roster that could easily beat Webb out for one of the spots–so it will be interesting to see how the next few months go for the once hopeful quarterback.
Either way, this seems like a last shot for Webb as the Vikings are at least willing to keep him around to see if he can be used at wideout. If not, don’t be surprised if Minnesota ends up parting ways with Webb before the start of the regular season.
