This is a list of five players that could explode for the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2013 NFL season.
I compiled this list with the purpose of thinking not only about which players could make the team, but which players could contribute to the Chiefs in their own special way and may just explode.
Two players are on offense, three are on defense. Some were on the team last year, others were drafted in the later rounds of the draft this year -- rounds that often go overlooked -- and yet one more is a four-year veteran of the NFL.
This list is to help all Chiefs fans get to know their players better, and make Chiefs fans who read this article more knowledgeable when talking to fellow Chiefs fans about their favorite team. It is about projecting my favorite team and hyping them up, because as Chiefs fans, we have been in for a long last 20 years.
With no playoff victories since Joe Montana in 1993, all of us in Chiefs nation need this. We need to get hyped about these players because these are the players that are going to make plays when we least expect it, to help the team get into the playoffs and upset someone else on the way to the Super Bowl. In the words of Herman Edwards, a former Chiefs head coach, "You play to win the game..."
And Chiefs fans, these five players, along with the other 48 that make the team, are in it to win it this year.
Jerrell Powe is 6-foot-2, 330-pound sixth-round draft pick in the 2011 NFL draft. He is going to back up Dontari Poe this season at nose tackle. He has a good first step, and a great dip-and-rip move to get to the quarterback. Look for him to produce and the Chiefs not to lose a step when he is spelling Poe.
Austen Lane is a pass rushing defensive end specialist coming over in free agency from Jacksonville. He is probably the fastest defensive lineman on the team and will get a lot of playing time in third-and-long situations this year for the Chiefs. Look for him to produce four or more sacks as a part-time player in 2013.
Mike Catapano is a rookie seventh-round draft pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. He has looked really good in the preseason before getting injured. If he ends up making the 53-man roster, look for him to climb up the depth chart and at the end of the year to spell Tamba Hali and Justin Houston.
Eric Kush is a rookie sixth-round draft pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. He might be the best pass protector of all the Chiefs' offensive linemen, and he takes great angles in blocking. Look for him to spell Rodney Hudson at center and give up little to no sacks when he is in the game.
Devon Wylie is a fourth-round draft pick of the 2012 NFL Draft and he has speed to burn. Look for him to contribute on special teams as a returner and make a name for himself under former Chicago Bears special teams coach, Dave Toub, who made Devin Hester famous.
