New England Patriots Rumors: Rob Gronkowski To Start Season on 53-Man Roster?

What an offseason it’s been for the New England Patriots. For a franchise that’s normally as stable as they come, there’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding the defending AFC East champs right now. I don’t think there’s anyone that could have predicted the Pats would be down three of their top pass-catchers from a season ago, but that’s the harsh reality for Bill Belichick and company. But after everything that’s gone on, the latest rumors are finally hinting at some good news for the Patriots.

Rob Gronkowski may not start the season on the physically unable to perform list, as most people have assumed he would. This of course would mean that the team thinks he would be ready to play before week seven. If Gronk does go on the PUP list, he’ll have to sit out at least the first six weeks to comply with league rules. This decision will be made very soon, as final roster cuts will be announced on Saturday and teams across the league will be chopped down to 53 players.

Gronkowski hasn’t done much of anything on the football field this offseason. He’s spent more time on the operating table than he has catching passes in live action, so you really have to wonder if he could be ready in less than two months from now. I’ve maintained all along that New England must be ultra-conservative with their All-Pro tight end, because there’s absolutely nothing to gain by rushing him back.

The smart move is to place Gronk on the PUP list to start the season and to give him all the time he needs to get back on the gridiron at full strength.
