The New Orleans Saints have finalized their roster cuts and their 53-man roster is finally set.
There were many players that were expected to be cut, and there were also some players that were surprisingly cut. The most notable cut the Saints made has to be wide receiver Courtney Roby. After five seasons with the Saints, Roby could not make the final cut and even Preston Parker, who many thought would replace Roby, was released as well.
Here is the complete list of players cut by the Saints today:
QB Ryan Griffin
WR Courtney Roby
TE Kevin Mealton
OG Andrew Tiller
OG Elliott Mealer
DT Isaako Aaitui
LB Ray Shipman
CB Chris Carr
DE/LB Jay Richardson
S Jim Leonhard
WR Preston Parker
FB Austin Johnson
WR Saalim Hakin
TE Michael Higgins
C Jeremiah Warren
LB Rufus Johnson
S Jerico Nelson
LB Baraka Atkins
OT Marcel Jones
CB Korey Lindsey
CB Jumal Rolle
OG Eric Olsen (placed on IR)
Now that the Saints have trimmed their roster down to 53, the team will be ready to square off against their biggest rivals, the Atlanta Falcons, next Sunday. Two of the most notable cuts were Roby and Parker as the Saints decided to stick with Andy Tanner to fill out the wide receiver depth chart.
Some other surprising cuts by the Saints were linebackers Richardson, Johnson, and Atkins. The Saints are not very deep at linebacker and the defensive line for that matter, so many thought they would retain more defensive players than they did.
With all of the NFL rosters set at 53, the start of the regular season is less than a week away and teams are ready to get started in their quest for a Super Bowl. Despite some notable cuts, the Saints are comfortable with their team and are ready to get going now that Sean Payton is back.
This season, the Saints could make a lot of noise as they look to make a deep run in the playoffs after missing out last year.
