Terrelle Pryor will start at quarterback for the Oakland Raiders this Sunday, and some people aren’t happy about that fact.
According to NFL.com’s Mike Silver, individuals within the Raiders organization doubt Pryor as the team’s starting quarterback. Whether due to his lack of experience or unpolished abilities as a passer, skepticism is running rampant in Oakland.
And for good reason…
The only reason that Pryor is starting in the first place is former starter Matt Flynn threw his chance in the trash during the preseason. He showed an inability to escape pressure in the Raiders’ oft-crumbling pocket and displayed his infamously-weak arm. Overall, it was an unimpressive preseason showing that forced the Raiders to look elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Pryor wasn’t any better. Although he flashed an ability to pick up yards on the ground, his quarterbacking was ugly. He threw a couple of unnecessary interceptions and was generally inefficient with his passing. His scrambling, however, was enough to keep him atop the depth chart.
It may seem like Pryor is the best option for the Raiders at this point, but as Silver pointed out, some Raiders brass seem to think that undrafted rookie Matt McGloin gives them the best chance under center – I mentioned the same thing before Pryor was named the starter.
While McGloin is the most inexperienced of the group, the rookie has a solid set of physical tools and the leadership to warrant an opportunity to start for the Raiders. It likely isn’t going to happen anytime soon, but if Oakland’s 2013 season goes as expected, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Penn State product under center at some point.
Either way, the Raiders are barreling head-first into a season that could easily see them go 0-16. No matter who’s under center in 2013, it’s not going to be pretty.
