Just in case you thought there was any chance of Kirk Cousins taking over for Robert Griffin III, Mike Shanahan has cleared the air. The Washington Redskins head coach had this to say to a reporter who asked the question in a roundabout kind of way on Monday:
“Um, no, no. But if you want to ask questions like that, please don’t blame it on somebody else. I don’t mind answering those questions, but no, we’ve got a lot of confidence in Robert.”
Shanahan – 1, Reporter – 0
Most football fans can’t stand Mike Shanahan, but after that fantastic answer, he may have won over a few of them. I like the burn on the reporter and the fact that he stood up for his guy. The head coach is right on the money. It’s way too early to make a switch to Cousins. I’m not writing off that possibility, but we’re only two games into the season for crying out loud.
It’s been clear all offseason that RG3 is the Redskins’ guy. They’re all in on him and that should have been made real clear by the fact that they trotted him out there in week one, when he was visibly not himself. The franchise is going to live or die with Griffin this season.
But with all that being said, you can’t say with 100 percent certainty that they wouldn’t go to Cousins. If RG3′s knee started to give him problems, they would be dumb not to. I know we live in a ‘I want it now’ society, but fans are going to have to be patient while the young quarterback tries to regain his form.
