San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was just arrested on suspension DUI last night. He was arrested after there was a one car crash in the Silver Creek area. This is not a good sign for young player with immense potential on the field. There is already a lawsuit pending against him to for an incident that allegedly involved him and former 49er tight end Delanie Walker.
Though Smith is only 23 years of age, he needs to be more responsible with himself and the safety of others. DUIs have been prevalent in the league for several years, and players have been fined and suspended by the league.
Putting Smith’s public endangerment to the side, he needs to consider his on field performance and how it will be compromised by his choice of beverage. The team still has practice, whether light or heavy on Fridays. Though the Indianapolis Colts are not the juggernaut that their division rival Seattle Seahawks are, they are still a more than viable opponent. Smith needs to be focused and at the top of his game physically as well.
There is nothing wrong with enjoying alcohol, and drinking it excessively is a matter of choice. But to excessively drink during your team’s second “Super Bowl Or Bust” season is far from wise. He should expect management to have a very nice sit down with him to discuss his choice for entertainment on a Thursday night.
Smith was the 49ers 2011 first-round draft pick from Missouri. Last season, he recorded 19.5 sacks on his way to a Pro Bowl season.
