There is absolutely no excuse for cursing at a fan. Quarterback Geno Smith of the New York Jets has had a rather frustrating year so far in his sophomore season, so much so that after a third straight loss, he took it out at a fan in attendance.

With an interception and two fumbles against the Detroit Lions, things aren’t looking too good for Smith at the moment. While fans filled MetLife Stadium with “We Want Vick!” chants, Smith lost his cool for the first time in his professional career. Fans everywhere have learned to admire his ability to stay calm, cool and collected during intense moments, but he made a really dumb mistake lashing out at a fan.

Even though Smith apologized in a press conference after the game, he truly needs a lesson in being a professional. What he did was inexcusable, and he should be fined and held accountable for his actions. Not every game will be a breakout game, but Smith truly let a very dedicated fanbase down with not only his terrible on-field performance, but for the fact that he took it out on a fan.

In the city that never sleeps, you either put up or shut up. A quarterback in New York better perform consistently or he will be gone faster than he knows it. Smith has made some pretty bad mistakes so far this season, and his time is running out.

In just four games so far, Smith has committed seven turnovers as a player, leading the NFL. Instead of lashing out at fans because he’s frustrated, maybe Smith should actually learn how to not commit so many mistakes as a quarterback. Being a professional goes a long way, even when the going gets tough.
