Starting 1-3 for a season as a head coach certainly makes you lose a little sleep at night. One can only imagine what’s going on in the mind of head coach Rex Ryan being that he’s on the hot seat yet again with the New York Jets. Things for Ryan so far this season haven’t been easy amidst a quarterback controversy that could signal he’s losing control of his team.
Owner Woody Johnson has gone on the record saying that a playoff berth this season for the Jets won’t be the breaking point to determine if Ryan will be brought back in the future. To avoid distractions this season, Johnson said that all will be decided once the season is over. Surely Ryan would want to head into those kind of meetings with at least an appearance in the playoffs to give him some leverage in keeping his job.
Ryan’s hot seat is getting warmer after a three-game losing streak and things getting worse makes life more difficult to handle. With a struggling quarterback in Geno Smith and a defense that is starting to fall apart, Ryan is losing time to make this season anything worth remembering. The next few weeks will be crucial for Ryan since the Jets’ schedule only gets tougher with the next few weeks featuring matchups with the San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos and New England Patriots.
Should the Jets lose all three of those games, Ryan might have his back against the wall, especially if his defense can’t contain some of the best aerial attacks in the NFL. With a non-existent running game that is turning the Jets into a one-dimensional team on offense, Ryan looks like he already has one foot out the door.
It will take a complete turnaround for Ryan to be able to feel comfortable again and gain the confidence needed to have a decent amount of job security. While many doubt Ryan would lose his job at any point this season, should things get flat out embarrassing as the losses start to pile up, it might become a totally different story at any given moment.
Overall, Ryan will need to put together some impressive team performances before he can rest easy again. Until the Jets start winning games the way they should be, it seems that Ryan might be in some hot water moving forward.
