NFL Pittsburgh Steelers
The good news -- the Pittsburgh Steelers are 3-2, adding another win in Week 5. The bad news -- they didn't look all that impressive against a winless Jacksonville Jaguars team. The teams combined for one offensive touchdown in the Steelers' 17-9 victory. Here are the five takeaways from the Steelers' Week 5 win.
The Steelers' defense stepped up their game in Week 5. They got back to stopping the run, which is something they've struggled with so far in 2014. The Steelers held Jacksonville to just 56 yards on 15 attempts. That's just 3.7 yards a carry. In the first four games, the Steelers gave up 114 yards a game on the ground. Stopping the run helped the Steelers' defense look better against the pass as the Jaguars only mustered 243 total yards.
Let's face it -- Antonio Brown is a beast. He is now an elite receiver and pretty much the most dangerous receiver in the game. Brown racked up 84 yards on five receptions. His biggest catch was in the third quarter, leaping over the defender and hauling in Ben Roethlisberger's pass for a 30-yard gain and a first down. That catch set up a drive that stalled at the Jacksonville 16, when Ben Roethlisberger fumbled.
The Steelers may have the best one-two punch at running back. I don't understand why Todd Haley refuses to run the ball more. Le'Veon Bell led all rushers in the game with 82 yards on 15 carries (5.5 yards a carry). He has more than 600 yards rushing through five weeks. LeGarrett Blount comes in and simply gets the tough yards the Steelers need. He rushed eight times for 28 yards, including two key first-down runs in the fourth quarter.
Coach Mike Tomlin said the issues with penalties will be addressed. He even brought in referees for practice this week, but it didn't seem to help. The Steelers racked up seven penalties in Week 5 for 50 yards. That included another boneheaded celebration penalty -- this time by Lance Moore -- who spiked the ball after a 26-yard catch. Several of the penalties stalled promising drives. The Steelers must find ways to limit the yellow flags.
It was a sight Steelers fans haven't seen in a while -- an interception returned for a touchdown. Brice McCain picked off Blake Bortles' pass in the fourth quarter and took it to the house. The pick-six gave the Steelers a 17-9 lead, as they picked off Bortles twice in the game. In the first four weeks, the Steelers had just one interception.
