Since his arrival to the Chicago Bears, I have learned that Martellus Bennett is kind of a weird dude, but in a good way. He is much more talented beyond what he does on the field.
The self-proclaimed “Black Unicorn” is a musician, artist and author when he is not playing football. Earlier this year, he released a mixtape called “Year of the Orange Dinosaur.” In his latest instagram post, he announced details on how fans can get their hands on an autographed photo of Bennett, himself.
The idea came about about two weeks ago when Bennett posted on twitter to gauge fans’ interest. The idea obviously got good feedback. He also said on twitter that the books would be used for his personal library. Yes, comic books and children’s books are welcomed. Now a “Martellus Bennett signed photo” could be yours. All it takes is a book and a well-thought out letter mailed to Bennett.
This type of fan interaction has become trendy. Antonio Brown of the Pittsburgh Steelers does something similar. Instead of exchanging books for an autograph, he allows fans to mail in Steelers gear or memorabilia to be signed and returned. The mail became overwhelming, yet fulfilling for Brown, as documented in a recent feature by ESPN.
Bennett was under fire early on in training camp for an incident with rookie Kyle Fuller. The attention that surrounded it may have caused some people to think lesser of the Bears tight end. One thing is for sure: Bennett is the type of person the NFL needs, especially in today’s league.
