Haters of the New England Patriots were gleeful entering this week. It looked like the Patriots were finally heading in a downward direction after years of domination. The old saying, “what goes up must come down” was starting to come true. Those who enjoy seeing coach Bill Belichick squirm and give short, testy answers were rolling on the floor laughing.
How did the Patriots respond to all the criticism?
Yup. A 23-point beatdown of the Cincinnati Bengals will silence a lot of critics. The Bengals’ offensive weapons actually had a decent night, but New England was on a mission. The Patriots had something to prove. Tom Brady hadn’t faced any questions about his performance since … well, when HAS Brady faced questions about his passing? When you get Brady upset, he gets even.
This team looked totally and completely lost in last week’s loss against the Kansas City Chiefs. They looked like the Patriots teams of the early 1990s, before owner Robert Kraft arrived and Drew Bledsoe‘s arm brought the Patriots back to respectability.
Brady has guided the Patriots to nonstop success for the last 13 years. The team, however, looked human this season, mainly because Belichick made the mistake of shipping offensive lineman Logan Mankins away to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The loss exposed Brady to defenders, who were all too eager to get revenge on the Patriots after all these years.
All Brady did Sunday was silence his doubters for a week. It may have even been for longer. Time will tell.
The Patriots still have the final say on who will win the AFC East, as all roads go through Foxborough. If the Patriots give up the AFC East title, it won’t be without a fight.
