New York Jets Set HC Rex Ryan Up To Fail In 2014

Just a few months ago, head coach Rex Ryan was given the green light to return to the team that he helped bring back to the spotlight. Thanks to Ryan, the New York Jets enjoyed immediate success back in 2009 and 2010 as they earned back-to-back trips to the AFC Championship game. They had one of the best defenses the NFL has ever seen, a strong offense and a young quarterback in Mark Sanchez who was lighting up the scene. Those are fond memories, but fast forward to now and Ryan is on the opposite end of the spectrum.

With a 1-4 start to the season, Ryan is looking more and more like a coach on his way out. Sure, one could make the argument that he was set up to fail this season due to a lack of quality personnel decisions for the roster. You could also make the case that general manager John Idzik truly did a poor job in acquiring top talent either through free agency or the 2014 NFL Draft. If anything, the offseason could be summed up as wishful thinking that every acquisition would have a productive season. Boy, did the Jets drop the ball on the talent they decided to bring in.

It’s sad that with over $20 million in available salary cap space, the Jets didn’t feel it was a priority to add a second quality receiver to complement Eric Decker or pursue a top cornerback for the defense. It’s no secret that the Jets thrive on a defensive system that is mostly man-to-man coverage and requires studs at cornerback for everything to gel. Everyone they brought in through free agency or drafted either isn’t even on the team anymore, under-performing or watching the game from the sideline due to injury.

In all honesty, Ryan was given the short end of the stick. While he’s doing his best with a subpar roster filled with a lack of talent and injury-prone athletes, it won’t be enough to secure his tenure into next year. While many doubt the Jets would be foolish enough to release him anytime during the season, it’s sad that they didn’t support the man who helped bring so much success the moment he stepped through the front door.

Since the Jets did indeed set Ryan up to fail this season by not giving him the tools needed to succeed, they have no one to blame but themselves. Now it’s back to the drawing board to determine who will be the next head coach to try and fix this franchise yet again. Ryan deserved better than this, but at the end of the day, his coaching career is far from over once he’s eventually released by the Jets after the season is over.
