When one thinks about the NFL and its stars, two names that are always mentioned are Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.
They are both the faces of their franchises and also faces of the NFL as a whole. They have both had amazing careers to this point, but the question that comes up often is who has had the better career? Tony Dungy gave his praise to Brady on Sunday, stating that he has had the better career than Manning, and Dungy is right.
When comparing these two future Hall of Famers, you can see that they are eerily similar. They are both in their late-30s and have played in the league for over a decade. They have both gone to the Pro Bowl almost every year of their careers. They both have massive passing yardage and touchdown numbers under their belts. They both have trophy shelves stacked with awards, and they are two of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game.
So the question now becomes: how do you differentiate the two? Well, they each have something unique to themselves.
When looking at Manning, he has records and lots of them. He holds several team records and NFL records. He is about to pass Brett Favre for the most touchdown passes in NFL history. He will also likely pass Favre for the most passing yards in NFL history within the next two years. All of the records make him the likely name to come up as the greatest quarterback to ever play, but this does not mean he has had a better career than Brady.
Brady does not have all of those records and he likely never will, but he has things Manning doesn’t have, like Super Bowl rings. Brady has won three Super Bowl titles as opposed to Manning’s one. Brady was able to turn his New England Patriots team into a dynasty in the early 2000s, while people criticized Manning for not being able to get over that Super Bowl hump. That criticism continues today, no matter how well Manning does in the regular season.
So when deciding whether Brady or Manning had the better career, the answer seems to depend on what you value more — records or Super Bowls. Since every player who has come into the NFL has said that their goal is to win the Super Bowl, I think it’s safe to say that Lombardi trophies outweigh NFL records.
For that reason, Dungy is right with his interpretation, and Brady has had a better and more fulfilling career than Manning.
