The 2014 NFL season has just been one big inconvenience for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This season has been riddled with subpar QB play, a terrible ground game and a defense that hasn’t panned out. The man behind the drapes is Lovie Smith.
Brought in with high expectations, Smith has yet to prove himself as anything more than a bystander. He leads the cheerleading squad right now. But in all honesty, Smith has yet to produce, which raises the question of how much longer will the front office allow this?
I will give him the benefit of the doubt because he was brought into a poor situation, but it is his job to turn it around. So when will Smith be packing his bags? I say as soon as Week 8 or 9. If the Buccaneers fail to win this week or following their bye week, I can see the team handing Smith his pink slip. The only way for Smith to save his job is for the Buccaneers to win this next game to gain some momentum heading into the bye week. Another question that arises is if Smith gets fired, who will take his place?
Most likely the offensive or defensive coordinator, at least in the short run. However, if they Buccaneers escape with a win over the Baltimore Ravens and then beat the Minnesota Vikings, we might see Tampa Bay turn it around.
But this all comes down to Smith and whether or not he can get his team behind him. Smith is a great coach; he has just had trouble in Tampa. Look for the Buccaneers to come out fiery against the Ravens in an effort to change the direction of the season. Leadership will need to come from the young Mike Glennon if the Buccaneers hope to succeed.
