The Tennessee Titans are off to a rough start this season, but that could change this week when they will take on the worst team in the NFL, the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars are the worst team in the league, but they still have the potential to win a game any week. And for that reason the Titans still need to show up and play hard. In particular, running back Bishop Sankey has to have a breakout game.
Sankey was the first running back picked in the 2014 NFL Draft and was expected to get a lot of work with the Titans. He has disappointed so far, not getting the lion’s share of the touches behind Shonn Greene, but Sankey has some good numbers that deserve greater playing time. He is averaging 4.7 yards per carry and over 10 yards per catch. That should work well for Sankey against a poor Jaguars run defense. All he needs is the opportunity.
And that opportunity will come for Sankey this week. Greene seems likely to miss this game with a hamstring injury which pushes Sankey and those stats into the starting lineup. And not only is Sankey going to get a lot of touches by being the starting back, but he will also be a workhorse because starting QB Jake Locker is likely out this week in addition to Greene. Charlie Whitehurst will take over, and he is not a great QB by any means. This just screams that they are going to feed the ball to Sankey most of the day to take some pressure off of Whitehurst and the passing game.
With so many injuries for the team this week, the Titans need someone to step up and make plays on Sunday against the Jaguars. The offense will live or die on the running game against Jacksonville, and since Sankey is the starter, that makes him the team’s x-factor this week.
