Missed Meeting Issue Puts QB Geno Smith On Borrowed Time
There has been some commotion lately involving quarterback Geno Smith and him being absent for an important team meeting last week. Whether it contributed to the New York Jets‘ 31-0 loss to the San Diego Chargers will never be known, but one thing is for sure — his tenure as a starting quarterback is already on borrowed time. It’s one thing to make a boneheaded mistake due to the time differential from the East coast to the West coast, but think about things from a different perspective in the grand scheme of things.
When was the last time you heard a starting quarterback committing such an error amidst a time where the team is on a three-game losing streak? Surely Smith should have exercised more urgency in doing everything and anything to salvage this season not just for himself but for the team. As a leader on any football team, you should always be the first guy there and the last one leaving at any given time, especially when the team is losing games like there is no tomorrow.
While many think that it was a simple mistake, it truly raises questions as to whether or not Smith is mentally ready to accept all the trials and tribulations of being a starter on a New York sports team. Surely, a team that is desperately looking for any kind of positives during some negative times would have their unspoken leader going above and beyond what is needed to ensure success.
Since Smith was getting a ton of praise during training camps and preseason football as an unspoken leader, why couldn’t he be on top of things during the time where the games actually count?
Some say that head coach Rex Ryan has been too soft on Smith and that most others in his position would have benched him during that game to hold him accountable for his actions. Smith ended up playing and, well, it probably would have been better had he not played at all with that terrible performance during one of the worst games of his career.
Regardless, Smith is indeed on borrowed time because, if he keeps up his awful performance on the field, he won’t have to worry about starting games for a while. With some incredibly tough games coming up against the Denver Broncos and then the New England Patriots on a short week, Smith better bring a digital recorder to every meeting and set his alarm clock twice from here on in.
