If the Dallas Cowboys‘ 30-23 victory over the Seattle Seahawks doesn’t show that they are the NFL’s best, then what will?
For the first time since 2007, Dallas is 5-1 and has their longest winning streak since that season when they finished 13-3, and had the NFC’s best mark. This team just beat the defending Super Bowl champions in their home stadium, a place the Seahawks have now only lost twice in the past 19 games.
What’s even more impressive is that this game wasn’t actually that close. The Cowboys gift-wrapped the Seahawks’ 17 points off a couple special teams miscues, and a botched quarterback-center exchange. Now, if we wipe those 17 points off the board, the final score would have read: Dallas 30 Seattle 6 — think about that for a moment.
The Cowboys completely dominated on both sides of the ball, and really had their way with the Seahawks and their No. 1 ranked defense. DeMarco Murray finished with 136 yards on the ground, his sixth consecutive game with 100 yards, tying Jim Brown’s NFL record; this included the game-winning touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.
Additionally, the Cowboys’ defense displayed their true toughness and didn’t allow Russell Wilson and company to really get anything going at all. In fact, the Seahawks only had eight first downs on the day.
Ultimately, these Cowboys have found the winning formula to clearly be considered the NFL’s best. They run the football better than anyone, and play a smash-mouth style on defense.
With Dallas’ permanent commitment to the run, quarterback Tony Romo seems revitalized as he no longer has to wear the cape by himself. Instead of having to make every single play for the Cowboys to even have a remote chance to win; No. 9 now only has to make a couple plays to ensure victory, which has increased his overall effectiveness.
Speaking of effectiveness, the Cowboys’ defense has benefited greatly from Murray’s performance through six weeks and it’s about time for other teams to take this unit seriously. They swarm to the ball and play with the highest amount of energy in the league. In addition, I believe Rolando McClain has given this unit an identity. McClain, weathered by his own life experiences, has brought a hit-you-in-the-mouth style of football to the Cowboys. He, like every other player on defense, has completely bought into defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli’s coaching philosophy, and they only continue to get better week by week.
Lastly, the Cowboys undoubtedly have the best kicker in the league. Dan Bailey, “Mr. Automatic,” hit on three field goals Sunday to become the most accurate kicker in the history of NFL, with none bigger than his 56-yarder to draw the score even in the third quarter.
Overall, the Cowboys have all the qualities of the NFL’s best team. They have a Pro-Bowl quarterback that can make all the throws to win, they possess the league’s best rushing attack, have a bend but don’t break defense and an elite kicker who’s clutch in crunch time. Let’s not forget about a champion’s mettle that’s been created as result of their several prior collapses, and a new-found depth at all skill positions.
The NFL is just a better place when the Cowboys, “America’s Team,” are relevant. They should be No. 1 in most power rankings and polls come Monday.
