The laughingstock known as the New York Jets went from humorous to just plain pathetic today after a disappointing 31-17 loss to the Denver Broncos. The game started off rather well for Geno Smith and Gang Green, as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead early, but Peyton Manning turned it on and, by the beginning of the third quarter, it was 24-7 in favor of the Broncos.
However, Rex Ryan got the Jets’ defense to settle down, and New York began to turn it around. By halfway through the fourth quarter, Smith had recorded another touchdown pass and it was 24-17. Even though they stalled Manning, Ryan could not get his team to capitalize. The Jets got the ball back with less than a minute left, pinned deep in their own territory and as expected, Smith threw a pick-six to Aqib Talib.
Sunday marked the fifth straight loss for the Jets and one week closer to Ryan posting a fourth consecutive under .500/losing season. Denver and Manning also dropped Ryan’s overall career record with New York to a disappointing 43-43.
Even though the last five games have been against some of the top teams in the NFL, it is no excuse for Ryan, who looks like he is putting back on the pounds. It seems there are two jobs in this world that, no matter how poorly you perform or how many times you are wrong, you can’t get fired. Those jobs are a meteorologist and the Jets heading coaching position. No matter how much of a circus New York becomes or how poorly they perform, Ryan has all the job security in the world.
That being said, it is time for the Jets to cut ties with their head coach. Sure, the first two years were great as they saw impressive playoff runs, but ever since 2010, it has been a downward spiral. Between the constant controversies, the foot fetishes and the on-the-field antics, Ryan no longer deserves the position.
Ryan is much better suited as a defensive coordinator. I will give him credit; in his tenure with the Jets, he has always produced a solid defense, but the offense has been atrocious. If his brother, Rob Ryan, continues to blow it for the New Orleans Saints, then big old Rex might be able to steal that job.
Regardless, one fact remains; it is time for New York to go in a different direction that does not include Ryan.
