Just as the New England Patriots start getting back on track, the injury bug strikes. Both linebacker Jerod Mayo and running back Stevan Ridley sustained what could be serious injuries against the Buffalo Bills.
Mayo was spotted wearing a compression sleeve after the game, which might be a good sign. That being said, losing Mayo for any period of time would be a blow to the Patriots’ defense. Mayo is the heart and soul of the defense and makes contributions all over the field. To make matters worse, the Patriots do not have much depth at linebacker so even just replacing him — if you can even call it “replacing” — for a short period of time is going to be difficult. Let’s hope it’s just a minor injury.
Ridley’s injury seems like it could be much worse:

A torn ACL would take Ridley out for the rest of the season and kill whatever running game the Patriots had. Depth again is a problem here for the Patriots. While Shane Vereen and Brandon Bolden are on roster, both backs have their downsides and I don’t think either could take over Ridley’s workload. I hope Josh McDaniels and the Patriots’ offense doesn’t turn to a running back committee and basically abandon the run for the rest of the season, but I can see that becoming a real possibility.
Needless to say, these injuries are going to have a drastic impact on a Patriots team that seemed to have finally found success. Now, they have another obstacle to overcome.
