Roger Goodell Should Give Up Disciplinary Duties at Request of NFL Owners
The NFL has gone through their fair share of problems with their public image in 2014. A lot of that stems from how commissioner Roger Goodell has handled the business of disciplining athletes for misconduct. With their product losing credibility by the week, the NFL owners have decided they would prefer if Goodell gave up disciplinary duties all together.
Just because the owners want Goodell to take a backseat in the way the NFL disciplines its players does not mean they think any less of the job that he does up to this point. Goodell is still their man in the front office. He has even been publicly praised by several owners during the hard time the NFL has endured as far as the way the public views the league.
The desire for change also has nothing to do with how the Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson cases have unfolded in the media. In fact, the owners believe that Goodell has so much on his plate as it is that it is a disservice to him to continue allowing him to deal with individual disciplinary actions. The person who essentially runs the company has to focus on the big picture, not the minor details of the day-to-day operations.
Several players have publicly displayed their disgust for how Goodell operates when it comes to handing down punishments. Many have claimed that even though no facts are revealed about individual cases, Goodell still gives harsh penalties. It is essentially a dictatorship in which the freedom of innocent until proven guilty is completely tossed out the window.
For now, Goodell will continue holding court, but there is a new dawn approaching. A personal conduct committee, which will have complete control over disciplinary actions, will be put into place as early as next season.
