After Cincinnati Bengals kicker Mike Nugent missed a 36-yard field goal in the final seconds of a 37-37 tie with the Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati defensive back Adam Jones was not afraid to voice his displeasure. Jones, who is no stranger to controversy, was quick to point the finger at Nugent, who made all three of his attempts before missing on the final play of the game.
“We should’ve [expletive] won the game,” Jones said.
When asked what went wrong, he chuckled and said, “You tell me. We were in perfect position to win the game, two seconds left on the clock; we’ve got to win the game. Everybody gets paid to do a job, so perform and do your job.”
Obviously, the Bengals did eventually put themselves in position to win the game. They played well enough to win in overtime and you expect your kicker to deliver on a 36-yard attempt every time.
What Jones fails to acknowledge, however, is that his defense gave up 37 points to an offense that averaged 20 points per game entering Week 6. Sure, Jones wasn’t responsible for all of those points and he even broke up a pass in the end zone in overtime. That being said, he needs to understand that the game could have been won before overtime if the defense would have done its own job throughout the game.
What Jones needs here is perspective. There are a lot of things that contribute to the outcome of the game and no matter how frustrated you are, you can’t single out the kicker for this loss. Jones plays on a defense that has given up 80 points in their last two games. The Bengals’ issues go deeper than Nugent, who has been a decent kicker in the NFL since 2005.
I understand Jones’ disappointment after the game, but he needs to learn that there are some things you can’t say, particularly when your own defensive unit has been destroyed in the last two games. Take some responsibility, recognize that every game is a team effort and avoid talking down to Nugent, who clearly knows that he let his team down.
