Dallas Cowboys: NFL’s Best Team Right Now

I know that hyperbole is the only language journalists and analysts speak these days, but I try and keep a level head when it comes to most situations; things are never as good or as bad as they may seem at the time, and this is especially relevant when it comes to the game of football. But as a good friend of mine once said to me, “In order to be No. 1, you have to beat No. 1.” Well, that is exactly what the Dallas Cowboys did on Sunday afternoon in Seattle when they took it to the defending champions in their own backyard.

Now, I realize that this Sunday’s game wasn’t the Super Bowl, or even a playoff game at that, but every season has a defining moment in regards to what kind of team you are going to be for that year and I believe that the Cowboys have just had that moment. Two years ago, the Baltimore Ravens were on the road against the San Diego Chargers and faced a fourth and four forever situation when Joe Flacco checked down to Ray Rice and watched him dip and dive his way to a first down. That tremendous play set up the game tying field goal, which sent the game into overtime and eventually got the Ravens the win. It was a moment that once again instilled in the team the belief that they could win under any circumstance and catapulted them to a Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers.

Just look at the moment Drew Bledsoe went down with a life-threatening injury when he was with the New England PatriotsTom Brady stepped in and elevated the level of play at that position and they not only went on to ride that magical wave to a Super Bowl win that year, but in the process found the cornerstone they needed to create a dynasty.

Well, this Sunday’s win against the Seattle Seahawks let the Cowboys know that the sky is the limit for this team. Sure, they had some solid wins against the New Orleans Saints and the Houston Texans at home, but this was against the supposed bullies of the NFL on the road. They went up against a defense that only allowed only 62 rushing yards per game and hadn’t allowed a single back to rush for more than 40 yards in any game this season. All they did was go in and rush for 162 total yards as a team, which included 115 yards from Demarco Murray himself.

Playing behind a mauling offensive line and using a bruising running attack allowed the Cowboys to become the bully that day, and it let the Seahawks and the rest of the NFL know that these are not your same old Cowboys. This team has an identity and a game that can travel anywhere and produce regardless of the situations that arise within the game.

If they get behind because of a fluke blocked punt that’s returned for a touchdown, they no longer panic and abandon their game plan. They know that can run against anyone and they stick to it to allow themselves a chance to get back in the game. As a matter of fact, if it wasn’t for a muffed punt and a fumbled snap, this game wouldn’t have even been close. They were that dominant on both sides of the ball.

Combine the fact that they can put up that kind of performance against the defending champs and the fact that no one else in the league has a better record than they do, and it’s really not that big of a stretch to say that the Cowboys are the best team in the NFL right now. If they just stay healthy and continue to stick with their identity, who knows how far this team can go once January arrives.
