Based on the talk about head coach Jim Harbaugh losing his job at the end of the season, you’d think the San Francisco 49ers are having a terrible season. While the team did get off to a slow start, they now sit at 4-2 and are very much in the NFC West divisional race.
Really, nothing is wrong with Harbaugh in terms of X’s and O’s and that’s why this team keeps winning. The only problem about Harbaugh in San Francisco is that he appears to be hard to work with. Despite all of the distractions, he has his team rolling right now.
It would be very interesting to see if San Francisco keeps improving and appears in the Super Bowl. What would happen in that case? Could the 49ers front office really fire Harbaugh if he took the team to the Super Bowl? This team is not Super Bowl caliber right now, but with some in-season adjustments they could be.
In fact, Harbaugh has proven that he can improve his teams mid season. They get hot and then make deep playoff runs. That’s what his teams do. His method has gotten them to a Super Bowl and almost got them to another one.
Keep putting the blame on Harbaugh and the 49ers will just keep winning. They’re one of the best teams in the NFC once again despite all of these distractions and that’s a testament to the group in the locker room. Playing for your coach’s job can be a powerful motivator.
At 4-2 and with a good shot at making the playoffs, don’t underestimate the motivation that comes from playing for your coach’s job. If it powers them to a Super Bowl victory, we will all be laughing about how the 49ers were going to fire Harbaugh.
For now, one thing is clear: even with all of the talk about their coach’s future, the 49ers just keep winning.
