Detroit Lions running back Reggie Bush was drafted No. 2 overall by the New Orleans Saints in 2006 and spent five seasons with the team. This will be the first time since leaving New Orleans after the 2010 season that he will get a chance to play his former team. Obviously he won’t need any extra motivation to get up for this game, and that’s good news for the Lions. He will be the X-factor for Detroit in their Week 7 matchup with the Saints.
New Orleans has struggled mightily on defense this season. They currently rank 23rd in the NFL in total yards per game given up. Bush has gotten off to a little bit of a slow start this season, but he will be ready to break out of his slump this week. The Saints’ defense has given up 22 receptions to running backs this season, and Bush has gotten 20 receptions through five games played with the Lions. He will certainly be a threat in both the run and pass game for Detroit. Calvin Johnson will potentially miss his second straight game this Sunday which will put even more pressure on Bush to perform at a high level.
Big plays will be especially important for the Lions. Matthew Stafford and the offense have struggled to get big chunks of yardage with Johnson out of the lineup. So far this season, the Lions have 19 pass plays of 20 yards or more but only one rushing play that has been at least 20 yards. The Saints have given up a total of 23 plays of at least 20 yards, so the opportunity will be there for Detroit. Bush becomes their best big play threat with Johnson out of the lineup.
There’s something sweet about going up against your old team. Even if you left on good terms, it’s always nice to have a big game when you face a former employer. Bush is looking to recover from a slow start to the season and it starts this Sunday. He will lead the Lions to victory over the Saints.
