Last week, New York Giants second-year lineman Justin Pugh struggled against the Philadelphia Eagles‘ defense, allowing four sacks in what could be labeled his homecoming game. This week, the Giants will face another NFC East rival, the Dallas Cowboys, in yet another offensive lineman’s homecoming game. This week, rookie Weston Richburg will return to Texas, where he grew up six hours away from Dallas.
Without a doubt, Pugh played his worst game since being drafted by the Giants two years ago, but the offensive line’s poor performance didn’t single handedly rest on his shoulders. Pugh and the rest of the offensive line, including Richburg, hope to bounce back from their poor performance against the Eagles in a game the Giants need to win.
Pugh made mention that close friends and family members were hounding him all week looking for tickets to the game, but he wouldn’t use that as an excuse for his poor play. Lucky for Richburg he won’t have to worry about that. Richburg joked that everyone he is close to got their tickets for this game as soon as he was drafted.
Against the Eagles, Richburg gave as mixed of a performance as he has all year, but he has seemingly to learn from his mistakes. These occasional bumps are something Giants fans are going to have to expect from the rookie this year. What they shouldn’t have to see or expect are silly penalties, like the unnecessary roughness call that turned a second-and-five into a second-and-20 during the second quarter.
Like any rookie, Richburg will have his growing pains, but hopefully this week’s homecoming game will have far less growing pains than Pugh’s game last week.
