Outside linebacker Connor Barwin of the Philadelphia Eagles is not talked about as MVP like J.J. Watt, doesn’t demand the attention of the rest of the NFL like Richard Sherman, and isn’t regarded as one of the best linebackers in the NFL like Patrick Willis. However, Barwin is making a significant impact to the Eagles organization through his playmaking ability, hard work and nose for getting to the quarterback.
Barwin has not forced the most turnovers on the team and does not have any touchdowns on the best point-producing defense and special teams in the NFL, but his impact as an outside linebacker has created many of those opportunities for others, which is why he is the Eagles’ Defensive MVP going into the bye week.
Last season, Barwin had 5.0 sacks, but through just six games this year, he already he has 6.0 (thanks to 3.0 against the New York Giants‘ offensive line during Week 6). Barwin also makes his presence felt in the passing game by being one of the best in the league at swatting passes when he rushes the passer.
With an incredible ability to get his hands on the ball after the quarterback releases it, Barwin has gotten into the heads of quarterbacks, who now change their arm angles in order to avoid throwing it over Barwin’s head because of the likelihood of it being batted down if they do.
Barwin came to the Eagles via free agency two years ago and has made a significant impact on the organization in that short amount of time. His hard work, leadership and toughness are becoming more apparent as the season progresses, and he is becoming more of an integral part of the Eagles’ culture and the Philadelphia community. Look for Barwin to continue to make a significant impact all season long, leading the Eagles to the playoffs and beyond.
