The Green Bay Packers have been on a roll lately, mostly due to the multifaceted quarterback leading their team. Aaron Rodgers is the most talented quarterback in the NFL and did his best this week to prove that.
Rodgers has elite arm talent, as he is able to make any throw with incredible accuracy whether his feet are set or not. His ability to throw the ball to all three levels of the field while dodging defensive lineman is remarkable to watch. Rodgers rarely has his feet set under him as he goes to throw (which usually spells misfortune for any other quarterback), but it does not seem to matter to the man who infamously fell on draft day to 24th overall pick in 2005.
Rodgers’ talent goes beyond being able to make spectacular throws; he also has the ability to scramble and use his feet to run, always seemingly getting the yardage needed. He does not use this ability as often as he used to (Rodgers had over 200 yards rushing in five consecutive seasons from 2008-2012), but he does have 18 career-rushing touchdowns. Like any great pocket passer, Rodgers goes through his progressions masterfully, but if the play breaks down he quickly is able avoid pressure (while keeping his eyes down-field to make a throw) and get up-field to get a few yards.
Just like all of the other great quarterbacks to come before him, Rodgers also has great command of the mental side of football, as he routinely changes the play at the line of scrimmage and always seems to find the best match-up.
This skill was on display last week against the Miami Dolphins, when Rodgers faked a snap (doing his best Dan Marino impression) and threw the ball over to his rookie wide receiver Davante Adams (whose man was playing eight yards off of him), who was able to grab the ball, get a first down and get out of bounds, allowing for Rodgers to throw a last-second touchdown to beat the Dolphins. This command of the playbook and ability to improvise on the spot is an incredible ability that once again sets Rodgers apart from his counterparts.
Rodger’s elite talents were on full display this weekend, as he seemed to have complete control of the offense, leading touchdown drives on the first three possessions of the game against the Carolina Panthers. This is not breaking news, but Rodgers is the most talented quarterback in the NFL, and the distance between him and the next guy seems to grow greater each week.
