Amidst numerous allegations of wrongdoing off the field, former Heisman Trophy winner and Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston has decided that he will enter the 2015 NFL Draft.
There is still some slight wiggle room in what Winston could do after the 2014 campaign, but according to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, it’s a “virtual certainty” that he heads to the NFL after this season.
The Seminoles still have five games (plus a likely playoff appearance) to go in 2014, but Winston has already made up his mind that he won’t stick around to see if more legal inquiries arise. There was also speculation that Winston would simply drop out of Florida State before more damage was done to his reputation and draft stock, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.
Winston is coming off a huge game against Notre Dame that essentially solidified his standing as one of the top passers in the country. The 2013 Heisman winner completed 23 of 31 passes for 273 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, and came back from a rough first half to shred the Fighting Irish secondary in the final 30 minutes.
It already seemed like a done deal when Winston took out a huge insurance policy before the 2014 season began, but this just finalizes the fact that he’s ready to bid college farewell before he finds more ways to shoot himself in the foot.
Prior to the beginning of these off-field issues, which include a sexual assault investigation, shoplifting and yelling obscenities in the middle of campus, Winston was seen as a first-round talent who could go as early as No. 1 in 2015. However, over the last year, the Florida State gunslinger has certainly taken himself off of numerous draft boards.
It’s unclear just where Winston will go when the 2015 NFL Draft rolls around, but one thing is for sure. He’ll be available, and chances are someone will roll the dice on the oblivious quarterback.
