The New England Patriots have been walking on cloud nine for the past few weeks, winning three games in a row. For NFL fans, this means the Patriots are back to regular form, but for local fans, this meant a hard-hitting injury was likely around the corner.
My money would have been on Rob Gronkowski, but as it turns out, a more important player is the latest to succumb to injury – Chandler Jones.
The 24-year-old defensive end has been a star for the Patriots’ defense so far. Nearly halfway through the regular season, Jones’ name is most certainly in the mix when it comes to Defensive Player of the Year, so his absence will be devastating to the team.
Jones, who was absent from practice today, along with cornerback Darrelle Revis, was missing due to an apparent hip injury he suffered in Thursday’s game against the New York Jets. The word as of now is that this injury could keep him out for as long as a month. The next four games on tap for the Patriots include the Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions, with a bye Week following the Denver game.
Three of these four teams are absolute powerhouses, and the value of Jones could become incredibly clear if he is unable to suit up for any of them.
Jones has 4.5 sacks on the season and has been a standout player for the New England defense. While this injury may not be serious by normal standards, any time missed on the field will most certainly have a negative impact on the work-in-progress that is the Patriots.
