The Seattle Seahawks shocked the football world last week by trading away Percy Harvin. It was a move that no one was predicting, although in hindsight it’s understandable why Seattle made the call to New York.
But everyone still wants to know what was really behind Harvin’s exit from Seattle.
Clearly, the guy isn’t the greatest of teammates. His past is checkered with questionable incidents, and it’s pretty apparent that Percy Harvin is about Percy Harvin above all else. That’s not an uncommon theme in the NFL or any other pro sports league. On strong teams like the Seahawks, those bad apples, no matter how talented, don’t typically have a place. It happens.
When it comes to the specifics of Harvin’s exit, no one knows for sure what all went into it (besides the Seahawks). But as more reports emerge, it seems that the WR may have been against Russell Wilson.
According to Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report, the Seattle locker room was growing more divided by the week:
“One Seahawks player said the biggest reason the team traded the wide receiver was his increasing animosity toward Wilson. The player said Harvin was an accelerant in a locker room that was quickly dividing between Wilson and anti-Wilson.”
On top of that, Freeman suggests that some of the Seahawks’ black players feel Wilson isn’t black enough:
“There is also an element of race that needs to be discussed. My feeling on this—and it’s backed up by several interviews with Seahawks players—is that some of the black players think Wilson isn’t black enough.”
In addition to his alleged lack of blackness, some players apparently feel Wilson is too close to the front office and that he doesn’t always shoulder enough blame for bad plays.
Either way, no matter the reasons behind Harvin’s exit, he’s gone. It’s a new chapter for Seattle moving forward. Maybe the wide receiver did have to go? It’s clearly not good for business to have a hot head player rallying others against the team’s quarterback. And not just any quarterback, but an extremely talented one who’s already a proven winner.
When it comes to the topic of winning, as is the case with most teams, it should cure all for the Seahawks. As long as Wilson keeps helping put Ws on the board, you probably won’t hear too much more about Seattle’s locker room allegedly being divided.
