With the playoffs a pipe dream at this point, the Tennessee Titans know they have to start planning for the future. Once promising quarterback Jake Locker was supposed to be a huge part of that future, but he can’t stay healthy or consistent nowadays. That led the team to announce they will start former LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger under center on Sunday.
Even though he’s young, his leadership and play on the field impressed his teammates during the preseason. His 6-foot-5, 224-pound frame certainly should play well in the NFL. Now, all that remains to be seen is how he responds to regular season, in-game pressure. Up to this point, he has attempted just five passes in his career, completing two of those for 17 yards.
The call to start Mettenberger is the right choice for the Titans. The season is lost and playing Locker even more isn’t going to show them anything. If Mettenberger can’t get it done, they know they may have to take a quarterback in the draft this coming offseason. However, if he shows he has what it takes, then they may have the quarterback of the future.
Simply, this is a win-win situation in Tennessee. Either they lose more, get a higher draft pick and have their future quarterback decision made for them, or they have a quarterback for the next few years at least.
In college, Mettenberger threw for 5,783 yards and 35 touchdowns while posting an impressive 148.4 passer rating. All indications were that he would’ve been taken much higher in the draft had he not torn his ACL late last season. In fact, it’s extremely impressive he’s at this point in his professional career after such a serious injury less than a calendar year ago.
What do the Titans have to lose with this decision? Nothing. That’s why starting Mettenberger was the correct decision for this Sunday and moving forward in this season and beyond.
