Anyone who has watched quarterback Peyton Manning over the years knows that he hates it when the home crowd gets loud when his offense has the ball. The biggest reason is because his teammates need to hear him make his several adjustments at the line of scrimmage. Plus, nothing infuriates Manning more than the occasional false start. That is exactly what set the veteran off Thursday night, with the Denver Broncos scoreboard operator taking a majority of the blame.
“I have no problem with our fans, our fans are great. I got a problem with our scoreboard operator,” Manning said, according to SI.com. “I’m going to have to have a little talk with him. I’m not sure what he’s doing. He was playing music and showing people players dancing and getting the crowd fired up and we have the ball. I don’t think we should be doing that.”
Manning understands the importance of getting the home fans pumped up. But, the stirring up of the crowd needs to occur when the opposing team has the ball. That is when the noise needs to become a factor. The signal caller also believes the scoreboard operator, who is essentially directing the crowd on what to do, must take a chill pill, even with the score out of reach.
It was not just the playing of loud music that made Manning’s night somewhat unpleasant. He did not appreciate seeing a displeased Philip Rivers on the large screens at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.
“I don’t think we should be showing their quarterback on the sideline,” Manning said. “I thought that was kind of disrespectful. Our fans are great, our fans are loud. The scoreboard operator, it wasn’t his best night.”
On the contrary, Manning had another outstanding game. Last week’s record-breaking performance aside, one could make the case that the 35-21 win against the San Diego Chargers was Manning’s best effort of the season.
As far as the scoreboard operator is concerned, listening to what Manning has to say is in his best interest. Losing his job is certainly not outside the realm of reality, especially if Manning does not approve.
