Cleveland Browns wide receiver and former Cincinnati Bengal Andrew Hawkins took the two team’s division rivalry to a whole new level on Tuesday
After asking Austin his favorite player was, Hawkins received not one, but two magic words, “Sanu and A.J.,” that ultimately sent his son, backpack and all, out the front door. As most may know, Sanu and A.J. are Mohamed Sanu and A.J. Green of the Bengals. It was all in good fun, of course, as are a majority of the fun-loving dads post on his Instagram, sharing memorable moments like this one with the youngster. The Browns are set to visit the Bengals in Week 10, so we will have to see what Austin’s status with the family is when that Thursday night arrives.
For Hawkins, it was a long and adventurous road to get to the NFL – a road that started out with the former University of Toledo star going undrafted in 2008. He coincidentally received a post-draft workout with his current team, but was never signed to a contract. After that, he spent two years in Canada playing for the Montreal Alouettes and starred in Michael Irvin’s reality show 4th and Long, in an effort to win a spot at the Dallas Cowboys training camp in 2009. Hawkins finished runner-up to Jesse Holley, who eventually spent three years with the Cowboys after that.
In 2011, Hawkins had finally made it to the NFL, signing a contract with the St. Louis Rams, who eventually waived him around the start of the season. But all was not lost, as he was claimed by his now division rival, the Bengals. In three seasons with the Bengals, he amassed 86 receptions, 995 yards, and four touchdowns. In 2014, the Browns offered Hawkins a reported four-year, $13.6 million contract that the Bengals did not match. He has not disappointed so far either, leading all receivers on the team in receptions (29), targets (53) and yards (382).
At the age of 28 and listed at 5-foot-7, 180 pounds, Hawkins knows, just like his 2-year-old son Austin, how it feels to be left outside in the cold and told, “Good luck” (in Hawkins’ surprisingly impressive acting voice), but the journeyman has worked his way from the bottom and is now a respected star wide out for his team in the NFL.
Just like his dad with football, I’m sure Austin worked his way back into dad’s heart, as well as the dinner table that evening. And who knows, with Christmas around the corner maybe dad will break down and have Santa Clause bring the 2 year old a Sanu and Green jersey this holiday season. This story to be continued, but I’m sure we will see what Hawkins has in store for us on Instagram come Christmas Day.
