NFL Chicago Bears

It’s Safe to Say That the Chicago Bears’ Season Is Over

Going into week 8 of the 2014 NFL season, the Chicago Bears were a team still trying to find their true identity. At the midway point of the year, the Bears found themselves with a 3-4 record, heading to Foxborough to face the 5-2 New England Patriots. Halfway through this matchup, it was painfully obvious that Chicago was headed in the wrong direction in efforts to turn their season around.

After only two quarters of play, the Bears were trailing by the score of 38-7. It was at that point that I came to the conclusion that any hopes of Chicago making the postseason in 2014 were down the drain. Their performance in this massacre was the last of many reasons that made me realize this.

First of all, the Bears have yet to win a game at home. Chicago should have at least beaten the Buffalo Bills and the Miami Dolphins at Soldier Field. Five of their final eight games of the regular season are in the Windy City, but there hasn’t been any proof to let anyone believe that they will be able to take advantage of being on their home field.

Second, the Bears are trailing the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions in the NFC North. There’s a really good chance that the Packers are going to claim the divisional crown again, and the Lions are right on their tails. Chicago only had one NFC North matchup (a week 4 loss to Green Bay). So technically, hopes for a shot at taking control of the division are still alive. However, their play on the field says otherwise.

Finally, neither side of the game is living up to expectations. The offense hasn’t come close to duplicating the production of last season. Key players on defense are either old, hurt, not producing, or all of the above. And even the special teams haven’t fixed the problems that have been lingering since the preseason.

After the 51-23 drubbing from the Patriots, head coach Marc Trestman and the rest of the Bears will have their bye week to regroup and try to right the ship for the second half of their season. Unfortunately, when they return to the gridiron, the Packers will be waiting for them at Lambeau Field. But even if the Bears do right some wrongs during their time off, it could be too little too late, because they may have dug themselves too deep into a hole already.
