The San Diego Chargers seemed like the team to beat, but two tough losses have brought them to a modest 5-3 record. They have one more game until their bye week, and will be facing a very good Miami Dolphins team. The Dolphins will present a good test for the Chargers, as they will look to get back on track. Their schedule for the second half of the season features some very difficult opponents. They need a better game from their offense, specifically in the running game. Branden Oliver will be the x-factor this weekend against the Dolphins.
The Dolphins have a very good pass defense that will give the Chargers trouble if they are unable to develop a balanced attack. They have a very good pass rush and good defensive backs that have helped them compete against several very talented quarterbacks. The Chargers must establish a run game early on so that they can keep the defense honest.
The team has had to deal with a plethora of injuries, especially at the running back position. Oliver has stepped up and provided some good games, along with some not so good games. He has shown power and quickness, but can’t do much if defenses are constantly getting penetration into the backfield. Oliver has proven he can carry the load throughout the game, but needs help from his offensive line to open up holes.
If the Chargers can utilize Oliver effectively, then it will open up the offense and help the team control the clock. They can keep the Dolphins’ offense off the field, and give Philip Rivers options to move the ball. This is an extremely important game for the team as they need to carry as much momentum as possible into their bye week. If Oliver has a big game, then it gives the Chargers a good chance to win.
