The Buffalo Bills are off to a great start this season, and with a 5-3 record in the first half of the 2014 season, the Bills have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs. Things haven't been easy for the Bills, but the team has shown tremendous character and effort, and with plenty of young talent, the Bills' fast start is even more promising. With that said, here is a midseason report card for the Buffalo Bills.

Since making the switch from E.J. Manuel to Kyle Orton, Buffalo's offense has improved marginally each week. Without Fred Jackson or C.J. Spiller healthy, the Bills' running game struggled a bit in week eight, but with Jackson scheduled to return in the next few weeks, they should eventually rebound. Buffalo's offense isn't a finished product yet, but the early returns are promising.

Even without Kiko Alonso and Jairus Byrd this season, Buffalo's defense has played very well. The defensive line is among the best in the league, and the secondary has played exceptionally well. The linebackers have been very solid so far as well, and it's clear that Buffalo has adapted well to defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz's scheme.

When you look at the talent on Buffalo's roster, it becomes clear that Doug Marrone is doing an excellent job as the Bills' head coach. Marrone has taken a young inexperienced team, and won games with it. That's extremely impressive for a man that was squarely on the hot seat coming into the season. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has also done a great job, making this grade even better.

First round selection Sammy Watkins has been everything Buffalo hoped he would be this season, clearly cementing himself as Buffalo's No. 1 receiver. Preston Brown has played very well on the defensive side of the ball, and seventh round pick Seantrel Henderson beat out Cyrus Kouandjio for the team's right tackle spot. Kouandjio has been a disappointment, but this draft class has been a hit overall for Buffalo.

As far as Buffalo's special teams are concerned, everything is running smoothly. Dan Carpenter has been one of the most solid kickers in the league, while Colton Schmidt has done an adequate job replacing Brian Moorman as the punter. The return game has been alright as well for the Bills, and should continue to be decent down the stretch.
