Coming into the 2014 season, the Arizona Cardinals were viewed as the third-best team in their own division. Playing in the ultra-competitive NFC West, the Cardinals were expected to finish behind both the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers; however, due to some outstanding coaching from Bruce Arians, the Cardinals currently sit atop the division at 6-1. With the way Arizona has played through the first half of this season, Arians is the clear-cut choice for NFL Head Coach of the Year.
There’s no doubt that Arians is an excellent offensive mind, but his work with the Cardinals’ offense has been nothing short of outstanding. Even with Carson Palmer forced to miss action because of nerve damage in his shoulder, Arians kept the Cardinals’ offense afloat through effective play-calling and an ability to tailor his game plan to fit his team’s strengths. Arians has also gotten the offensive line to play much better this season. Jared Veldheer has been an excellent addition to the line, and because of Arians’ exceptional coaching, Veldheer and the rest of the line has played very well.
There’s also no doubt that Arians is very well respected by his players. Players love to play for Arians, and because of this, the Cardinals have been able to outwork every opponent they’ve faced this season. Anytime a coach has the leadership ability that Arians has, they are going to be successful, and that has proven to be true this season.
Overall, Arians is far and away the most deserving candidate to receive the NFL’s Head Coach of the Year award this season. He’s taken a Cardinals team expected to do absolutely nothing and turned them into legitimate contenders. This is an easy call; Arians is the coach of the year.
