Heading into Week 9 of the NFL season, the contest between the San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins is an intriguing one, as it is only one of four games that consists of both teams having records above .500. With both squads looking to make playoff pushes, this matchup looms extremely large.
After starting the season 5-1, the Chargers have lost two consecutive games, both to divisional opponents, and really need to figure out a way to get back on the winning track. Philip Rivers is playing arguably the best football of his career, with 20 touchdown passes already, but needs more consistency from his playmakers. Wide receivers Keenan Allen and Malcolm Floyd have been non-existent at times in 2014, and while tight end Antonio Gates has continued his solid play, Rivers has not been getting the constant productions he needs over the past two games. Sunday at Miami will be a steep test to try and break out of the funk.
Miami has been an under-the-radar team that is above .500. They have gotten good enough play from quarterback Ryan Tannehill, and tailback Lamar Miller has shown flashes of brilliance. Both Tannehill and Miller will need to produce throughout the rest of 2014 if the Dolphins want to play in the postseason.
The Dolphins’ defense has been a major factor this season, as they are fifth in total defense, and are coming off a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars where they scored two defensive touchdowns. The defense may need to find the end zone again in Week 9 if Miami wants to come out victorious.
Final Prediction: This will be a tight contest throughout, but the Chargers’ losing streak will come to an end. San Diego wins 27-21.
