Despite a disappointing loss to the Washington Redskins last Monday, the 6-2 Dallas Cowboys are having a tremendous season and are on track to make the playoffs for the first time since 2009. However, if they’re going to do that, they’ll need a healthy Tony Romo under center.
That’s why the Cowboys need to keep Romo sidelined after it was announced that he suffered two fractures in his back after taking a ferocious hit against the Redskins.
After taking a big hit and knee to the back on Monday night, Romo exited the game but eventually re-entered the game despite being in pain. The Cowboys ended up falling short in overtime, and are now headed for a big-time showdown with the 6-1 Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. Despite the new information regarding Romo’s injury, it’s believed the Cowboys will still start the polarizing quarterback.
Doing so would not be a wise decision for Dallas.
Back injuries are nothing to mess around with, even if fractures to traverse process aren’t debilitating injuries. Considering that Romo has had back issues in the past and is quickly developing into an injury risk, letting him sit for a week (or two) and rest his back would be best. Suffering further aggravation could lead to much bigger problems down the road.
It’s believed that the decision will come down to whether or not Romo can handle the pain, but with a ferocious Arizona defense that likes to put pressure on the quarterback on the horizon, putting him in harm’s way wouldn’t be wise. Backup Brandon Weeden looked solid last week while Romo was out, and playing him comes with much less risk.
In the end, Jerry Jones gets what he wants. However, if his top priority is being successful in the playoffs, having Romo healthy is a must. Sitting him this week against the Cardinals should be the plan.
