After the announcement was made that the Dallas Cowboys would be without Tony Romo, many Cowboys fans weren’t that upset. After all, when Romo went down with a back injury last week, Brandon Weeden filled in perfectly fine for Romo. Because of Weeden’s two-drive performance where he put 10 points on the board, many Cowboys fans still believed the Cowboys could beat one of the best teams in the NFC in the Arizona Cardinals. Now, after a 28-17 loss, it’s clear that the Cowboys need Romo back sooner than expected.
To juxtapose how bad this offense was today, I will first start off saying that the Weeden-led offense only put up up 10 points in this game. To make matters worse, seven of those points were in garbage time — basically, the Cowboys only put up three meaningful offensive points in this game. Throughout the day, Weeden never looked comfortable in the backfield, and while the Cowboys tried running the football, their inability to move the ball on the ground game put more pressure on Weeden which led to two interceptions and a 55.5 quarterback rating.
Even though the Cowboys have now lost two in a row and the Philadelphia Eagles surpassed them in the NFC East standings, there is still a bright future for this team in 2014. However, the team needs to have more competent play from the quarterback position if they want to make the playoffs.
Next week, the Cowboys will travel to London to play the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars. While the Cowboys are expected to win this game, the Jaguars have been playing better of late and they could surprise this Cowboys team, especially if Weeden is the starting quarterback. While the Cowboys were smart to rest Romo, Dallas needs him right now. Playoff implications are clearly at stake, and the Cowboys will need No. 9 if they want to playing football in January.
