Dallas Cowboys Must Get Deal Done With Dez Bryant Now
A little over a week ago, everything was going perfect for the Dallas Cowboys. They were 6-1 and sitting atop the NFL. Eight days later, the Cowboys have lost two games in row and their quarterback is injured. Dallas’ biggest concern is the health of QB Tony Romo and they have no control over that. There is another problem brewing in Dallas, and it is one they have complete control over: The contract status of wide receiver Dez Bryant, and Dallas needs to address it now.
Before the season began, the Cowboys tried to get an extension done with Bryant, who is currently in the final year of his contract, but the two sides could not reach an agreement. Dez told the Cowboys he did not want to negotiate during the season because he wanted to focus on his play on the field. That plan was working well during the first seven games. However; in the past two games Dez has been held to five catches for 45 yards.
Dez has had drops and looked extremely frustrated on the field. Part of that can be explained by the fact that he has had to play with Brandon Weeden for much of the last two games, but I believe there is more to it than that. Bryant surprisingly fired his agent Eugene Parker last week reportedly for not being hands-on enough in negotiations. Roc Nation Sports is now representing Dez.
Bryant told reporters on Sunday that he is now willing to discuss a contract extension during the season, and that he would be very disappointed if Dallas decided to use their franchise tag on him next season.
The Cowboys can say there is no rush to get a deal done and they can act like it’s not affecting Bryant’s play on the field, but his actions and words tell a different story. Bryant is concerned about it, and that’s why it is imperative that Dallas gets a deal done now to set his mind at ease.
The Cowboys can still be a contender in the NFC, but in order to be that they must have three things. First is a healthy Romo. Second is continued health for RB Demarco Murray. The third is a happy and focused Bryant. Dallas may not have much control when it comes to the first two things, but they can make sure they have a happy and focused Bryant by giving him a new contract, and they need to do it now.
