The New York Giants have suffered through a number of injuries throughout the season. One area that has been hit especially hard has been the defensive backs, and it continued on Monday night against the Indianapolis Colts as starting cornerback Prince Amukamara tore his bicep muscle. The Giants had enough to get over some of the other injuries, but this is the one that may put a nail the team’s coffin.
In addition to Amukamara, the Giants have already lost top slot cornerback Walter Thurmond and his backup Trumaine McBride. Add to that the fact that Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is dealing with nagging injuries, and that is four of the Giants’ top five cornerbacks either out for the season or not playing up to their potential.
The Amukamara lose will be the last straw though, as he was having the best season of his career thus far. He doubled his career interceptions, totaling three this season while having only three over the first three seasons of his career. He was also second on the team in tackles, behind only linebacker Jacquian Williams with 42. He also led the team in passes defended with 11, as he was well on his way to a career season.
Amukamara has been the one constant in the Giants’ secondary this season as he stepped up to the plate on multiple occasions when they had no one else to go to. When Rodgers-Cromartie was signed, he was expected to shadow opposing teams’ best receivers. With him being slowed by a number of injuries, Amukamara assumed that role and he did it to the best of his abilities.
Plenty of people bashed Amukamara because of his performance against Dez Bryant and the Dallas Cowboys, but that was actually a strong performance given the situation. He was put on an island on numerous against Bryant, which is a matchup that no one would win constantly. Amukamara did what he could and performed admirably.
This injury to Amukamara will be a big blow for a team whose season was already teetering on the edge. The Giants will struggle to makeup the loss of Amukamara, who has been the most consistent performer on the field stats-wise and health-wise. It is a disappointing end to the season for Amukamara, one that will ruin whatever chances the Giants had at making a run in the second half of the season.
