New York Giants Fans Scratching Heads After Monday Night
Prior to the contest between the Indianapolis Colts and the New York Giants on Monday night, there was reason for optimism. Injuries to Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles and Dallas Cowboys‘ Tony Romo gave the Giants hope.
Unfortunately, the Giants provided just the opposite. From the opening snap to the final play, they were outplayed by a better team. The hollering from fans in the stands was bitter and dark. Again, the thoughts of a Giants team coached by someone other than Tom Coughlin entered the minds of Giants fans. A lot can happen in eight games, but there’s no question that due to many injuries, a lot of Giants players are looking for job security.
The most important Giants player, quarterback Eli Manning, will not be a free agent next season, but he is looking for a contract extension. He is 33 years old and has put up good numbers so far this season. With Victor Cruz injured, the only Giants receiver worth mentioning is Odell Beckham Jr. Manning needs help, but he wants to win as well.
If the Giants don’t make the playoffs this season, that will be their third straight year of not doing so. That has never happened throughout Coughlin’s tenure as head coach. So if it does occur, changes will likely be made. If Coughlin is fired, retires or leaves in some way, will Manning wish to remain with the Giants? There are lot of factors at play, and it is all but certain a team other than the Giants would be willing to pay him more.
For the first time in a long time, the future of the Giants is remarkably unclear. Every fan wants to play the blame game and determine who is more at fault: the coaches for their strategy, or the players for their execution? It’s usually a little bit of both, but in this case, it’s hard to picture any sort of strategy that the coaches could devise that would fix the players’ performances.
If there’s anything the fans should want at this point, it should be for the right players get their chances. This team is 3-5 and riddled with injuries. Robert Ayers and Damontre Moore deserve more snaps on the defensive line. Corey Washington deserves substantial minutes in moments that aren’t garbage time. No player’s job should be safe, no matter what their health or reputation is with the team.
Whether this team finishes 3-13 or 11-5, the fans should stay by the Giants. Calling for the head of everyone in the organization is foolish and selfish.
