The situation was set up perfectly for the New York Giants to get themselves back into the NFC East divisional race. They were coming off a bye, playing in front of a sellout home crowd on Monday Night Football and not one, but both of the teams they are currently chasing have their starting quarterbacks on the shelf with injuries.
A victory over a very talented Indianapolis Colts team would not only have evened the Giants’ record, but it would have given them a shot in the arm with some much-needed confidence after two consecutive losses to the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, who just happen to be the same two teams ahead of them in the standings.
But Andrew Luck picked the G-Men apart for four touchdown passes in a 40-24 rout, a game that was not as close as the final score may indicate. At one point in the fourth quarter, the deficit was 30 points. Needless to say, many of the fans made their way to the exit and New Jersey Turnpike before it was all said and done.
Now at 3-5, the Giants appear to be a team on a sharp decline in many different aspects. Offensively, they were held to a field goal at the half and only made it look respectable during garbage time. Their defense gave up big play after big play. At times, they looked as if they just wanted to get the game over with.
This even came up with Antrel Rolle, who has been vocal in the past about the team’s gumption in getting up off the mat after being knocked down. According to the team website, Rolle said:
“Whatever the reason is, we’re not winning games. That’s the only thing that matters. Whether it’s fight or not enough fight; whether it’s lack of execution. Whatever it may be, we have to figure it out. We have to get it right, otherwise we’ll just keep digging ourselves a hole.”
By dropping two, winning three and now losing three straight games, the Giants have certainly dug themselves that proverbial hole. Given their inconsistency, a postseason berth is nearly impossible at this point.
