Could quarterback Johnny Manziel be shipped to another team next year? Every single year during the offseason, a few crazy things tend to happen with huge player moves and big trades. When one looks at the quarterback situation with the Cleveland Browns, they have some tough and interesting decisions to make over the next few months.
With many believing the Browns will most likely stick to quarterback Brian Hoyer as their long-term solution, it’s believed that they will try to unload Manziel for some draft picks or key player upgrades. It’s no secret that Manziel would bring a media circus that hasn’t been seen since the likes of Tim Tebow. Once he eventually gets a starting job, it might even be bigger than Tebowmania.
Should the New York Jets be the team that gives him the keys to the franchise to see what he can bring to the table after this abysmal season is over? Absolutely not.
The Jets should actually stay far, far away from Manziel. Sure, they have a potential disaster of a situation with their quarterback situation heading into next season, but he isn’t the long-term solution the Jets need. Michael Vick will probably not be in the mix next season as he should draw some attention from other teams. Geno Smith still has a huge question mark on him since he’s been terrible so far and a proven turnover-machine.
Of course, Matt Simms is also around, but if he hasn’t warranted a decent shot at being a starter by now, it shows that he’s also nowhere near ready to make an immediate impact.
If the Browns lock up Hoyer to a long-term deal, which many predict they will this upcoming offseason, it will make Manziel expendable and very pricey. With glaring issues at cornerback and wide receiver, the Jets shouldn’t waste sacrificing future talent via the 2015 NFL Draft for Manziel. He’s unproven and most likely won’t be a successful starting quarterback in the NFL in the future. Bringing him in, especially to New York City, would be a complete disaster considering the Jets would surely have to send a ton of draft picks and maybe even more to acquire him.
The Jets need to decide to stick with Smith or move him into a backup role and draft their future quarterback so they can start from scratch. With their 1-8 mark on the season so far, they will most likely have a good enough first-round draft pick to at least get a future superstar who can finally be the answer they’ve been looking for in a quarterback.
